Three Ways to Galvanize Youth Philanthropic Action

Youth are not just the future, they are the present. In the 5 most populous African countries, a large part of the population is under the age of 30. Many youth wish to make positive change in their communities, but need support and encouragement from adults. The author shares insights based on his conversations with young people at the 2014 Youth Philanthropy Summit, which was organized by the Council of Foundations and Council of Michigan Foundations. It brought together 50+ people from more than 14 countries.
The author suggests encouraging young people to help their communities by doing three things:

  • avoid using the word "philanthropy" because youth associate it with old approaches to giving, which don't resonate the new generation
  • give them first-hand experiences.
  • give them opportunities to take risks as they learn to take on leadership positions in community development projects
